NATURE EXCURSIONS
From La Zarzamora there are many opportunities for nature excursions.
The region of La Janda, for example, is
full of fabulous landscapes and forests.
The lake of La Janda, covering 50 square kilometers, is considered
to be one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula.
The rivers of Barbate, Almodovar, Celemin and others of less importance
pour their waters into the lake, which is situated on top of a tetonic
depression. When the year was especially rainy, the lake flooded
to form one of the largest marshlands in the country, extending
some fifty thousand square meters but with little depth.
The close proximity of the marshes in Barbate, the fresh water, and
the dense vegetation favors a humid zone rich in diversity. This
has converted the area into a rest zone for thousands of birds passing
through annually from Gibraltar in their migratory paths.
As well you are able to enjoy walks and excursions in one of the
many natural parks in the area: Parque del Estrecho, La Brena, Marismas
de Barbate and the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales.
