VEJER DE LA FRONTERA
More than five hundred years of Muslem rule helped create one of
the most beautiful pueblos in the province gaditana(the province
of Cadiz). Vejer de la Frontera is located in the southwest portion
of the province sitting atop a hill 190 meters in height.
Vejer ascends into a labyrinth of white washed, steep streets, with
frugal facades hiding the surprises within their interiors: gorgeous
patios with their unknown niches full of plants and flowers, and
the history of las Cobijadas, the vejeriegas (women of Vejer) that
until well into the 20th century veiled their faces in the same
manner as their “sisters” of Xauen and Tetuan (Morroco),
where their ancestors settled upon leaving Vejer towards the end
of the 15th century.
The landscape and countryside surrounding Vejer is well integrated
with highly appraised natural and ecological monuments. Santa Lucia,
a rural agricultural region, is a declared Natural Monument with
it’s system of water conduction dating back to the Roman Era.
El Parque Natural del Acantillado, Pinar de Barbate, la Finca Las
Lomas and the ornatologically rich area surrounding the lake of
la Janda. The beach of El palmar, which occupies seven kilometers
of coast is conserved in it’s natural state. The sand is white
and fine, it’s waters transparent. It’s an ideal place
to practice water sports such as surf, windsurf and fishing.
The height of the hill that seats the pueblo of Vejer serves as
a starting point for the spectacular sport of hang gliding. It’s
also possible to hike or ride horseback through the Natural Park.
There is Golf nearby as well.
Of particular interest are the windmills located alongside the Barrio
de la Juderia, El Santuario de La Oliva (the church) and wandering
along the fortressed stone walls which enclose the center of the
pueblo, with it’s four doors, or entrances.
Nmac museum with it’s appraised contemporary art collections
(some of which are completely integrated into nature), is only 8
kilometers away located in Montenmedio.
